Dearest Members of Bethlehem,
“So we do not lose heart. Even though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by day.”
-2 Corinthians 4:16
Every once in a while a bright red notification will appear on my computer or phone screen indicating to me that it is time for an “update.”
And now, the deliberation begins! Should I do it? Will the update introduce too many new changes into my life? Do I really want to sit around and wait for a full two and a half minutes while everything reboots? And come on, what are the real risks of not shutting down to update?
Well, actually, those who are in the know will tell you that the risks are significant. Not only will your devices no longer be entirely compatible with those they’re connected with, there are security vulnerabilities that need to be addressed as well. We just don’t need the inconvenience of folks filching our personal information!
Obviously, there are spiritual aspects that ought to be addressed in the context of this conversation.
I will be the first to admit that it seems much more convenient to just keep going. Do what you need to do, check the boxes, and we can worry about shutting down and getting to the updates later!
But, when we systematically ignore the commandment to honor the Sabbath and keep it holy, when we cast a sideways suspicious glance at sabbath time in general… we are running a very serious risk, that will eventually catch up with us.
The truth of scripture, and God’s direction is this… sometimes, you’ve just got to turn it off, shut down, stop the incessant functioning. In the process you restore your spirit, deepen the connections with those that are most important to you, and tend to some of the vulnerabilities that could potentially have serious consequences.
Industriousness is noble and necessary, sabbath rest will always be sacred. Do yourself a big favor, go ahead and take some time to tend to those updates. Believe it or not, it’s not only the faithful thing to do, it will make you much more productive over the long haul.
Question for reflection: What does sabbath time look like for you, and how might you take that time more seriously?
Yours in Christ,
Pastor Dan
