Dearest Members of Bethlehem,
“…Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them, for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs.’” -Matthew 19:14
The week of vacation Bible School truly is a marvelous time.
The children, the volunteers, the music, lessons, games, and time in scripture are such a blessing. It’s only once a year, but to have a full week, day in and day out, during which we can devote ourselves to the faith formation of our youngest generation is both a joy and privilege!
There are shouts of glee, requests for this or that color of crayon, and momentary panic over missing name tags. Toppled juice boxes are dealt with and new friendships are formed. As the story of God’s work in the world is shared; hands are raised, questions and answers are offered with the same enthusiasm.
These children are learning about who Jesus is, how the community of believers lives, and how it is that these young people have a part to play in the grand narrative of redemption.
There is a sacred clamor resounding in our hallways that lets us know that God is shaping the new voices that are actively witnessing to God’s love.
“Jesus loves me this I know for the Bible tells me so. Little ones to Him belong…” Well, you know how it goes, because you have been blessed with the opportunity to learn this beautiful tune, and feel the assurance of its message.
Pray for us, because this week we’re striving to gift a whole new generation with the peace that comes with the knowledge of being “in Christ,” and it truly is some of the most important work we can do as the church.
Question for reflection: Whether you began your faith as a little one matters little, what do you think is most essential to pass along to the youngest members of the congregation?
Yours in Christ,
Pastor Dan
God of goodness and might, these busy weeks are a blessing beyond measure. So many faithful folks mobilized for meaningful ministry, and we see the inspiration of your Spirit all around us. Bless us with the energy necessary to sustain this effort with good cheer. In Christ’s name we pray, amen.
