Dearest Members of Bethlehem,
“Then opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.” -Matthew 2:11
This is the Epiphany of our Lord!
January 6th isn’t just the day set aside for the removal of Christmas decorations, it is the inauguration of a new liturgical season.
Of course, today is the day we remember the Magi following the star and finally making their way to Jesus. The wise ones brought gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
We know from Sunday School lessons and Bible studies that each of these gifts were laden with meaning. The good things that the Magi had to offer gave us a sense of who Jesus was; the newborn king, savior of the world, and worthy of our eternal adoration.
Epiphany, and the Magi, remind us that the season of gift giving need not come to and end. It is absolutely appropriate that we consider what it is that we might like to pass along to Christ, what will we offer?
No extra gold? No problem! Have no idea where to find some genuine frankincense or high grade myrrh? Don’t even think twice about it!
Perhaps we could spend a few more moments in quiet prayer this week, prayer that includes heartfelt adoration of the Divine. Perhaps we could share the forgiveness that we have been hesitant to pass along, forgiveness genuinely inspired by the miraculous grace of Christ. You get the idea… some of the best gifts that we have to offer to Jesus and our neighbors, when given with the best intentions still proclaim the truth of just who Jesus is for the world today!
Question for reflection: What gifts do you have to share with the Savior?
Yours in Christ,
Pastor Dan
Gracious Lord, today we celebrate that you are the Light coming into the world; the Light that the darkness can neither comprehend nor overcome. In these dreary days, we are grateful that your glimmering goodness always finds a way to illuminate our lives. In Christ’s name we pray, amen.
