Dearest Members of Bethlehem,

“Set every peak and valley humming with the word, the Lord is coming.  People look east and sing today - Love, the Lord, is on the way.” People, Look East, ELW #248

I have an affinity for Advent hymns, they’re the forgotten treasures buried within the hymnal that we stumble upon and uncover once a year.

“People, Look East” definitely ranks near the top of my list.  The very title of the hymn invites us into a deeper sense of expectancy, reminding us to look for the sun/Son that is bringing light into a new day.  Our preparation for Christmas is about honoring all that Christ is and will be for us.

And that’s the other reason I adore this hymn.  In each verse or stanza an aspect of Christ’s identity is introduced and considered.

Who is on the way?  “Love,” yep that’s how Jesus is initially characterized, “Love.”  And then, Eleanor Farjean (the author of these glorious lyrics) calls us to deeper reflection.

“Love,” is also the “Guest,” the “Rose,” the “Star,” and of course, the “Lord”. This is so good!

As we consider the spiritual dynamics of Advent, the beautiful sacred rhythm, in which we have been swept up, these descriptions prepare our hearts and minds in beautiful ways for the celebration of Christmas!

The “Guest,” of course, we are called to make ready, prepare our hearts, minds, and homes as we would for any other guest.

The “Rose,” in all its glory, invites us to behold the blossoming, unfolding beauty of God’s mystery, beginning with this baby in a manger and ending with a vacated tomb.

The “Star,” beckoning from the heavens, reminds us that Jesus will guide us all along our way, and that our hope for everything good will come as we follow.

And finally, “The Lord,” not only the One who requires our devotion and allegiance, but also the One who promises to provide for our deepest needs and sustain us in our journeys.

People, look East indeed!

Question for reflection: What symbol, image, or metaphor best helps you capture the significance of Jesus?

Yours in Christ,

Pastor Dan

Gracious Lord, as we prepare for the celebration of the incarnation, give us a keen sense of how your presence among us continues to bless us in profoundly life-giving ways. God, your Son, truly is a gift.  In Christ’s name we pray, amen.

We believe that a disciple is a student of Christ and a helper in Christ's redemptive and life-giving work. We strive to make disciples by sharing the message of Christ, by providing opportunities to come to a deeper understanding of God's word, and by empowering others to serve in ways that are in harmony with God's vision.
