The know it all...

Dearest Members of Bethlehem,

“An intelligent mind acquires knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge.” Proverbs 18:15

I recently read an interesting bit of wisdom, this is loosely quoted, but you’ll get the gist; “If you think you are the smartest person in the room, then you are in the wrong room.”

Quick quips like this often make me suspicious, but the more I thought about this particular sentiment the more I came to appreciate it. And here’s why…

One of the many joys that we share is the joy of discovery. One might think “having all the answers” would be just wonderful, but alas… I’m not so sure.

Getting up in the morning and knowing that we, “learn something new every day,” might be all the inspiration we need to face another day with genuine enthusiasm.

It often does cost a thing, may not take much effort, but when we are hoping for and anticipating deeper understanding… wisdom continually comes our way. It’s very much akin to the way the grace of God is gifted to us.

Furthermore, assuming you’re “the smartest person in the room,” may immediately excuse you from considering the lessons that others might share. And as to the scripture passage that appears at the beginning of today’s devotion, assuming you are the smartest person in the room may also excuse you from listening intently and valuing appropriately what others might offer in moments of grace-filled discourse.

Can you imagine what that might do to the quality of conversation?

We won’t always get it right, but we will be blessed when we seek wisdom, and humbly recognize there’s always something to learn, especially when it comes to our lives of faith!

PS… For those heading back to school, have fun learning and trust that you will be in our prayers in the weeks ahead!

Question for reflection: Do you feel comfortable giving advice? Why or why not?
